I am a Ph.D candidate in Modern East History at the University of California, Santa Cruz. My dissertation examines the environmental history of the Ogasawara Islands, a group of subtropical oceanic islands located approximately 1000 km from central Tokyo, in the contexts of commercial whaling, colonization, militarization, and conservation.
